Monitor lizards are interesting in that they are very similar to snakes, with their distinctive forked tongues that they use to detect scent molecules from the air. They also hiss when they feel threatened. They are also considered the most intelligent of all lizards.During mating some male lizards grab on to the head of a female with their mouth until she is ready to let him mate with her. They can remain attached this way for many hours, almost oblivious to their surroundings. In this case another monitor lizard had to bite both of the lizards to get their attention. The lizard also probably wanted to mate.
