I have been told that sumps are uncommon for freshwater aquariums. I have one for my 55 gallon tank. It's around 17 gallons and I reworked it cutting glass and installing my own baffles. My comet goldfish produce a lot of waste, but my oversized filter can handle it just fine, even with the more delicate angelfish sharing the tank.
This video shows cleaning of the sponge elements and explains the basic water flow through the series of compartments and baffles.
