Despite covering less than 1 percent of the Earth's surface, coral reefs provide shelter and habitat to thousands of species representing about a quarter of all marine species. In addition to providing sustenance to more than 500 million people worldwide, these amazing, fragile ecosystems protect coastal communities by slowing wave action and funnel billions of dollars of income to coastal communities through marine tourism.
