HERE IS A SAMPLE LETTER TO COPY & PASTE

Dear Senator,

I am writing to ask you to oppose the passage of the America COMPETES Act of 2022 (HR 4521). The restrictions of interstate travel of non-domesticated species, including fish, reptiles, and other exotic animals kept as pets in households all around America, will be severely limited. The environmental impact of these animals, which are kept as pets and are unable to survive in the wild, is negligible to the American environment. The passage of this bill without amendments to the clauses pertaining to exotic and non-domestic animals will cripple the exotic animal trade and husbandry industry, which includes not only the transport of animals, but the manufacture of habitats, accessories, and other specialized equipment to house these animals.

Additionally, parts of this bill would impact exotic and reptile rescues, which would no longer be able to adopt out the animals which would not survive in the wild. These rescues are a vital part of conserving endangered and threatened species, and animals that cannot be adopted out would have to be euthanized. The Lacey act, although flawed, gives power to individual states to regulate which animals may be housed or owned. This empowers states to make their own decisions about what may be considered an invasive species or a threat to their ecosystem. For example, Florida does not allow the ownership or trade of Burmese Pythons, which flourish in the state's subtropical environment. Michigan would have no reason to outlaw these animals, because they would not survive in a colder environment if accidentally released into the wild.

I ask you to please reconsider passing the America COMPETES act without significant changes to the sections pertaining to exotic and non-domesticated animals.

Thank you so much again,
(Your name)
