During my time as a volunteer at La Senda Verde, a Bolivian animal refuge, I took care of two orphaned Andean bear cubs. When I visited Tarkus (he was rescued in 2019 and brought to LSV) he sniffed me thoroughly (I must smell of bear cubs) and went to mark a tree with his scent.
Bears view their world largely through their nose.
Bears routinelly sniff each other when they meet.
Bears also intentionally scent-mark. By marking trees, the scent remains as an active, concentrated signal for longer than it would if just dissipated into the air.
