Herping σε Υφανέτ και αστικά πάρκα Δεκέμβριος 2021 - τρίτωνες, βάτραχοι, πρασινόφρυνοι κι άλλα

Herping in Yfanet stream and urban parks of Thessaloniki, Greece, on December 29, 2021. The group consisted of me, Vasilis and Brigita. The day was particularly mild for this month, and so we expected high amphibian activity. We started in the evening from Yfanet stream, where a large population of Greek smooth newt (Lissotriton graecus) resides, as well as other amphibians. The water was full of active newts. Because they are quite early in the breeding season, most of them are males, and also some of them are transitioning from the terrestrial to the aquatic phase. However, most had already developed their crest and tail fin. We also found a few females, some of which were already gravid. We caught representatives of all types to show. We also spotted two marsh frogs (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri), and one can be heard a little. You can also hear the newt defensive sound once. Invertebrates included the earthworm Octodrilus complanatus, the slug Tandonia sowerbyi and the centipede Lithobius forficatus. Then we went to Anthokomiki Park, to find slider turtles (Trachemys scripta) in its canal. Some were trying to mate even at this time of year. We caught one large female yellow-bellied slider (T. s. scripta) and a smaller red-eared one (T. s. elegans), which sadly had an ear abscess,, a common problem in mismanaged captive turtles. Lastly we went to HANTH Park to find green toads (Bufotes viridis). We caught 27 toads in total of both genders, all sizes and of a variety of patterns, all under utility hole covers. Some exceptional finds include a large female with a double left parotoid gland, and 13 toads together in a utility hole. Most were quite plump, but a few tiny individuals didn't have the time to accumulate enough fat for the winter.

Herping στο ρέμα Υφανέτ και σε αστικά πάρκα της Θεσσαλονίκης στις 29 Δεκεμβρίου του 2021. Η ομάδα αποτελούταν από εμένα, το Βασίλη και τη Μπριγκίτα. Εκείνη η μέρα ήταν ασυνήθιστα ήπια για το μήνα, και έτσι περιμέναμε υψηλή δραστηριότητα αμφιβίων. Ξεκινήσαμε από το Ρέμα Υφανέτ το απόγευμα, όπου υπάρχει μεγάλο πληθυσμός κοινού τρίτωνα (Lissotriton graecus), όπως και άλλων αμφιβίων. Το νερό ήταν γεμάτο από δραστήριους τρίτωνες. Επειδή είναι ακόμα η αρχή της αναπαραγωγικής περιόδου, τα περισσότερα είναι αρσενικά, κι επίσης μερικά τώρα μεταβαίνουν από τη χερσαία στην υδρόβια φάση. Εντούτοις, τα περισσότερα είχαν ήδη αναπτύξει το λοφίο και το ουραίο πτερύγιό τους. Βρήκαμε επίσης και λίγα θηλυκά, μερικά από τα οποία ήταν ήδη γεμάτα με αυγά. Πιάσαμε αντιπροσωπευτικά άτομα από όλες τις μορφές για να τα δείξουμε. Επίσης εντοπίσαμε δύο βαλτοβατράχους (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri), και ένας μπορεί λίγο να ακουστεί. Μπορείτε να ακούσετε και μια φορά τον αμυντικό ήχο του τρίτωνα. Τα ασπόνδυλα περιελάμβαναν το γεωσκώληκα Octodrilus complanatus, το γυμνοσάλιαγκα Tandonia sowerbyi και τη σαρανταποδαρούσα Lithobius forficatus. Μετά πήγαμε στο Πάρκο Ανθοκομικής για να βρούμε αμερικανικές νεροχελώνες (Trachemys scripta) στο κανάλι του. Κάποιες προσπαθούσαν να ζευγαρώσουν ακόμα και τέτοια εποχή. Πιάσαμε μια μεγάλη θηλυκή κιτρινομάγουλη (T. s. scripta) και μια μικρότερη κοκκινομάγουλη (T. s. elegans), η οποία δυστυχώς είχε απόστημα αυτιού, ένα κοινό πρόβλημα σε νεροχελώνες στην αιχμαλωσία με κακή φροντίδα. Τελικά πήγαμε στο Πάρκο ΧΑΝΘ για να βρούμε πρασινόφρυνους (Bufotes viridis). Συνολικά πιάσαμε 27 φρύνους από τα δύο φύλα, όλα τα μεγέθη και διάφορους χρωματισμούς, όλοι κάτω από φρεάτια. Κάποια εξαιρετικά ευρήματα περιλαμβάνουν ένα μεγάλο θηλυκό με διπλό αριστερό παρωτιδικό αδένα και 13 φρύνους μαζί κάτω από ένα φρεάτιο. Οι περισσότεροι ήταν στρουμπουλοί, αλλά λίγα μικροσκοπικά άτομα δεν πρόλαβαν να μαζέψουν λίπος για το χειμώνα.
