When abandoned newborn otter pups come into our care, they do not have the coordination to groom their thick coats. Otters groom their fur constantly to keep it in good condition and stay warm, but newborn pups are too little and aren't developed enough to properly groom. Their mothers will keep the pup’s coat in perfect condition for them until they can do it on their own.
When newborn pups come into our care, our staff steps in and cares for the coat like the pup’s mother would, and it’s a time-intensive task for our staff.
Our current otter pup patient is showing us that his mother taught him well! He is grooming on a regular basis and keeping his coat decently groomed. Our team has only had to assist him a few times so far! ???? #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek
