The camel is a large, hardy mammal well known for its distinctive humps on its back and its ability to survive in hot, dry deserts. There are two main species: the dromedary camel, which has one hump and is found mainly in the Middle East and North Africa, and the Bactrian camel, which has two humps and lives in the cold deserts of Central Asia.

Camels have long legs, wide padded feet, and thick eyelashes that help protect them from sand and heat. Their humps store fat, not water, which they use as energy when food is scarce. Camels can go for many days without water, but when they drink, they can consume up to 40 liters (about 10 gallons) in one go!

They are known as “ships of the desert” because they carry people and goods across harsh desert terrains. Camels are also domesticated for their milk, meat, wool, and as beasts of burden. They are calm, intelligent animals adapted perfectly for extreme environments.
