The hippopotamus or the hippo, is a large semiaquatic mammal native to Sub-Saharan Africa and its name which means river horse is derived from Ancient Greek. Besides elephants and rhinos, the hippo is the largest land mammal which inhabit rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps. Each territorial bull presides over a stretch of water with a group of five to thirty cows and calves. Both reproduction and birth takes place in water. Hippos stay cool by remaining in water or mud during the day and emerge at dusk to graze on grass. Hippos are amongst the most dangerous animals in the world as they are highly aggressive and unpredictable….and yet they are threatened by habitat loss and are poached for both their meat as well as their canine teeth.
