The Chinese giant salamander lives its entire life underwater, yet it has no gills. Instead, it absorbs oxygen through its skin. It is the largest living amphibian in the world today. It normally weighs around 30kg, but can grow to weigh 70kg and a length of up to 1.8m. Having changed only little from their ancestors, they are known as living fossils. Despite their fascinating nature, they are endangered and rare in the wild.
