Snack time: crunchy edition
While it can be hard sometimes to witness the cycle of life as one reef creature succumbs to the jaws of another, it's a lot easier when the prey is a veracious coral predator like the Crown-of-thorns Starfish (COTS)!
COTS are a major coral predator on the #GreatBarrierReef, which can contribute to widespread reef degradation when populations reach outbreak levels. Human intervention through targeted culling of these starfish is imperative, as predator numbers can't keep up with the rising threat. This starry pufferfish is a natural predator of the coral-eating COTS.
While we have trained divers out aboard the Crown-of-thorns Starfish Control Program vessels, these guys are underwater, enjoying a nice crunchy snack, while helping to control COTS populations too.
