In North Carolina, a 9-foot alligator was found frozen solid in ice. These cold-blooded reptiles can survive freezing temperatures by going into a dormant state called brumation. They instinctively stick their noses above water, which allows for the formation of protective ice layers. They remain still until temperatures rise and they thaw out, resuming normal activities with the melting ice.
