The axolotl is a unique amphibian native to freshwater lakes in Mexico, especially Lake Xochimilco. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain fully aquatic throughout their lives, keeping their external gills and juvenile features in a process called neoteny. They are easily recognized by their flat heads, feathery gills, and permanent smile-like expression. Axolotls come in various colors, including pink, white, brown, and black. Beyond their cute appearance, they are famous for their incredible regenerative abilities, capable of regrowing lost limbs, tails, and even parts of vital organs such as the heart and brain, making them a focus of scientific research.
