Meet Shores & Aquariums' newest resident--Fly River turtle, Lucy!

50-year-old Lucy arrived from the Bronx Zoo in December 2021. Lucy and 20-year-old male Fly River turtle, Kikori, love to receive back scratches from their care team! Fly River turtles have a layer of skin covering their shell, so they constantly need to exfoliate old skin.

The Fly River turtle (also known as the pig-nosed turtle) is the only freshwater turtle with flippers. The endangered turtle species is native to Papua, New Guinea, and one of the most illegally confiscated turtles in the United States, as they are shipped routinely for the pet trade and poached for their eggs and meat.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium supports the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA), a global non-profit conservation group that helps conserve the world's most endangered turtles and tortoises.

Lucy and Kikori rotate in the Fly River turtle habitat in our Reptile Building, so be sure to try to spot them during your next Columbus Zoo visit!
