Starry Night Octopus - Callistoctopus luteus

Callistoctopus is a genus of nocturnal, orange octopuses in the family Octopodidae. They are readily identifiable by their reddish coloring, the white papillae that line their bodies, and their long arms. Though sympatric with diurnal Octopus species, they avoid competition by hunting at night. In acknowledgment of this preference, many species of Callistoctopus are referred to as night octopuses. Well-known species include C. macropus (Atlantic white-spotted octopus) and the type species C. ornatus (ornate octopus), both of which are harvested for human consumption as seafood. Starry night octopus - small-spot octopus - Callistoctopus luteus:

Quite a common nocturnal octopus in the Philippines and thus only seen at night when it comes out to hunt. Unlike other Octopuses this one does not change its color much, it is bright reddish/orange/brown with speckles of white dots. It can grow to quite big, with a body of 1 foot or more and long arms compared to its mantle. Its habitat is sandy areas and seagrass bottoms or among coral rubbles in the shallow waters.
