Myth: Shrimp only breed in perfect water conditions.
It’s easy to think that if you’re not getting baby shrimp, it’s because your water isn’t “perfect.” But the reality is, shrimp can breed in a wide range of conditions—as long as the environment is stable and consistent.
Sure, extreme fluctuations in temperature, pH, or ammonia levels will harm shrimp and hinder breeding. But small deviations from “perfect” won’t necessarily stop them from breeding. In fact, shrimp are incredibly adaptable and can reproduce in less-than-ideal conditions, as long as the water is within a healthy range for that specific species.
For example, Neocaridina Shrimp are fairly forgiving when it comes to water parameters. They can breed in water with a pH of 6.5 to 8.0, as long as the tank is stable. Caridina Shrimp, however, are a little pickier and may require more specific conditions, like softer water and a slightly lower pH.
Breeding success often comes down to a combination of stable water, good nutrition, and environmental factors like temperature and hiding places. If your shrimp aren’t breeding, it’s more likely that one of these factors is off—rather than it being about “perfect” water conditions.
So don’t stress about chasing perfection. Focus on consistency, be patient and your shrimp will breed when they’re ready.
