An echidna I spotted on a walk near my home. Echidnas are monotremes, egg-laying mammals that form the evolutionary link between reptiles and mammals. They, and the platypus, are the only ones of these living fossils left on earth, and they can both be found in my neck of the woods. The platypus is much more shy though and very hard to spot in its native habitat. Echidnas, with their protective coat of spines, are not so shy, but once curled up into a tight ball they are pretty much invulnerable.
