In this video I build a planted tank for some red cherry shrimp.
The tank is a 10 gallon (37.8 L) column shaped tank, 12.5 in L x 12.5 in W x 19.5 in H (31.7 x 31.7 x 49.5 cm). For the base layer I used some simple gravel to build up height and create areas of beneficial bacterial growth. The layer was topped off with some fluval stratum aquasoil. Hardscape included some spider wood and some seiryu stone. I included a variety of plants in this scape, mostly low tech so they do not necessarily need any CO2. I utilized a fish less cycling process in order to facilitate the growth of the nitrifying bacteria in the tank by dosing the tank with some starter bacteria as well as using some fish flakes as an ammonia source for that bacteria to continue to grow. The first inhabitant of the tank was a nerite snail. He loved to eat the algae that grew on the glass. I kept the algae growing as it is a good food source for the snail and the shrimp. The shrimp were later added once the tank had fully matured. It was amazing to see how fast the shrimp were to make more babies. Most of the female shrimp were saddled and soon developed eggs. I cannot wait to see what this tank grows into.
