Native across a sizable portion of the warm Pacific and Indian oceans as well as the Great Barrier Reef, some species' ranges overlap with those of other species. There are no clownfish in the Atlantic Ocean. Sea anemones and clownfish have a mutually beneficial connection. When anemones are not present in an aquarium, clownfish may occasionally dwell in certain types of soft corals or giant polyp stony corals. The fish's skin may become agitated if it rests in a coral, and in rare situations, the coral may even die. The clownfish will protect an anemone or coral after it has become used to it.
An aquarium without predators does not require the anemone because reef living is not safe for small, colourful fish in nature. Clownfish never leave their host because of this. Clownfish frequently spend their entire lifetimes within 6 to 12 inches of their host in aquariums where they don't have to go scavenging for food.
