I currently do not have a heater running on any of my aquariums. I just leave them at room temperature which will range seasonally from 72 to 78 degrees. A few days ago I did a water change on my 40 gallon planted livebeater community tank and noticed the water seemed slightly cooler. The thermometer reads 69. I believe that spot in my house near a window and door is a bit cooler. The few other tanks that do have thermometers all read 72 which matches my thermostat. So either the 40 gallon thermometer is not entirely accurate or it's location is a tick cooler as I suspect. The fish are just fine and appear healthy without use of a heater and temperatures at the bottom or slightly below a perceived ideal range.
