Calming Signals - those body signals and facial expressions dogs use which express their stress or discomfort in a situation. Or, sometimes they are used as an appeasement strategy to diffuse a stressful situation/encounter with another dog or person.
For a while now, I have been considering the function and use of Calming Signals alongside what I have learnt about The Polyvagal Theory, vagal tone and co-regulation.
I have noticed some really interesting correlations, and I would like to share my thoughts and hypothesis with you, in the hope that we can get even more clarity about the innate wisdom and tools all social mammals (including our dogs and ourselves) already have, and how we can use this to bring more calm, balance and resilience into our daily lives.
