Crocodiles and Alligators may look similar, but if you look closely at some of their characteristics, behavior and habitat preferences they are different. In this video let’s see how they differ from each other.

SCIENTIFIC FAMILY: Crocodiles belong to the order Crocodilia and the scientific family Crocodylidae. Alligators also belong to the order Crocodilia but their scientific family is Alligatoridae.

NUMBER OF SPECIES: Globally there are 14 recognized crocodile species, but if you look at Alligators, there are only 2 recognized species.

DISTRIBUTION OF CROCODILES: They are widely distributed in the Caribean Basin, Atlantic Region, Sub-Saharan, Western, Central Africa, Indian Subcontinent, South East Asia and Northern Australia.

DISTRIBUTION OF ALLIGATORS: American Alligators are found in Southeastern parts of United States; and the Chinese Alligators are Restricted to Eastern parts of China.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Out of 14 Crocodile Species, 5 are Critically Endangered; 4 are Vulnerable; and 5 are of Least Concern. In case of Alligators, the American Alligator is of Least Concern; but the Chinese Alligator is Critically Endangered.

LENGTH: The approximate length of Crocodiles range from 13 to 20 Feet, whereas the length of Alligators can vary from 4.5 to 15 Feet. Crocodiles are considered larger than Alligators.

WEIGHT: Crocodiles can weigh approximately 220 to 1075 Kilograms, Alligators weigh 23 to 453 Kilograms.

COLOUR: Crocodiles are generally Olive Green, Brown or Light Grey, Alligators are mostly Dark Green, Blackish or Dark Grey in Colour.

SNOUT SHAPE: Crocodiles have a “V” Shaped, narrow, tapered, triangular snout. Alligators have a wide and “U” Shaped Snout.

TEETH: Crocodiles can put on a toothy grin, the 4th tooth on each side of their lower jaw sticks up over their upper lip. Even with their mouth closed they can show Visible Upper and Lower Teeth. Alligators Upper Jaw is wider than lower jaw and therefore only their Upper Teeth is visible and Lower Teeth are often Hidden.

NUMBER OF TEETH: On an average crocodiles have 60 to 72 replaceable hollow conical teeth, whereas the Alligators have 76 to 80 replaceable teeth. Both Crocodiles and Alligators use their teeth to tear and swallow their food, but cannot chew. Also in their entire lifetime both can grow 2000 to 3000 teeth and replace them more than 50 times.

BEHAVIOR: Crocodiles are considered to be a more aggressive species compared to Alligators.

JUVENILES: The juveniles of crocodiles are light coloured with dark speckles all over their body. The juveniles of Alligators are dark coloured and have yellow stripes.

BRAIN SIZE: The brain size of both Crocodiles and Alligators are really very small compared to their body. Crocodile’s brain weighs 10 to 20 Grams and the brain of Alligator is only ½ a teaspoon weighing 8 to 9 Grams.

NESTING: Crocodiles prefer to lay eggs in the mud or sand. Alligators lay eggs near vegetation or clean water. The average clutch size of Crocodiles ranges between 25 and 80 eggs, and the clutch size of Alligators ranges between 20 and 50 eggs.

PREFERRED HABITAT: Crocodiles can exist in both freshwater and saltwater habitats because they have higher functioning salt glands. Alligators are less tolerant to salt water and prefers only freshwater habitats.

RUNNING: Crocodiles can run 24 to 35 kilometres per hour, Alligators are comparatively faster, and they can run 32 to 56 kilometres per hour. Crocodiles can sprint anywhere between 20-30 meters, but quickly get tired. Alligators can usually walk 0.7 to 3.3 Kilometers a day.

SWIMMING: Crocodiles can swim 24 to 29 kilometres per hour, and Alligators are comparatively faster than crocodiles and can swim 32 kilometers per hour. Alligators are even considered faster than the Bottlenose Dolphins.

UNDERWATER: Crocodiles can hold breath underwater from anywhere between 20 minutes to 2 hours. Alligators can hold breath underwater anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours. They do this by preparing to slow their heart rate and body temperature.

LIFESPAN: Crocodiles have a higher lifespan compared to Alligators. Crocodiles lifespan ranges between 50 to 140 Years. Alligators can live anywhere between 30 to 70 years.
