Boosting my 14-month-old Walstad Aquarium with root tabs! ????????☘️????
~
This tank has been running strong for over a year, but lately, I’ve noticed slower plant growth. Some Cryptocoryne Wendtii Brown leaves have holes, and a few Vallisneria leaves are melting. Time to give the substrate a nutrient boost with root tabs!
~
Follow to see how the plants bounce back in the coming weeks!

About this aquarium:
~
This is a Walstad aquarium, an ecosystem where plants naturally filter the water and enrich it with oxygen. Maintaining a high plant-to-livestock ratio is essential. More plants help absorb waste and enhance water quality, while fewer animals prevent excess nutrients from building up.
~
Tank dimension:
20cm x 20cm x 25cm (10 liters or 2.64 gallons)
~
Inhabitants:
1) Wild type guppies
2) Chocolate Neocaridina Shrimp
3) Wild type neocaridina shrimp (reverted)
4) Ramshorn Snails
~
Plants:
1) Cryptocoryne Parva
2) Cryptocoryne Wendtii Brown
3) Vallisnera
4) Pearlweed
5) Dwarf water lettuce
~
Substrate:
Potting soil capped with sand and lava rocks.
~
Light:
IKEA TERTIAL Work Lamp with Philips 8W LED Coolday light
~
Photo period: 10 hours with 4 hours siesta period. Light on for 5 hours, off for 4 hours and then turn again for 5 hours.
~
According to Diana Walstad, plants consume the available CO2 by around midday. Taking a siesta allows the CO2 levels to replenish, providing enough for the plants to use again in the afternoon.
