Imagine being in the ocean and hearing a low-pitched sound that can travel for thousands of kilometers. You might be listening to the voice of the largest animal ever to live on Earth: the blue whale. Blue whales are marine mammals that belong to the group of baleen whales. They have long, slender bodies that can reach up to 30 meters in length and weigh up to 200 tons. Their skin is mostly gray with light spots, and their underside is lighter in color. Blue whales feed mainly on tiny crustaceans called krill, which they filter through their baleen plates. They can consume up to four tons of krill per day, using their huge mouths that can hold up to 90 tons of water. Blue whales are also known for their vocalizations, which are among the loudest sounds produced by any animal. They use these sounds to communicate, navigate, and find food in the vast ocean. Some of their calls can be heard over 1600 kilometers away.
