The Amur leopard, which inhabits severe regions in Russia's far east, has unusual adaptations including a coat that thickens considerably throughout the winter to shield it from temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. The Amur leopard has 'rosette' markings all over its coat, same as all other leopard subspecies.

The Amur leopard is the rarest large cat on Earth, just 30 were found living in a limited region near the Russian–Chinese border. Although the Amur leopard may be the most endangered big cat on the planet, numbers have been increasing as a result of outstanding conservation efforts.

The northeastern Asian leopard subspecies that once roamed southeastern Russia, Korea, and northeastern China is whence Amur leopards descend from. With the exception of moms with their young and adults during mating season, the Amur leopard spends most of its time alone. The main sources of food for the carnivorous Amur leopard are sika deer, roe deer, and various small mammals including squirrels, rats, and hares.
