Here’s how we stopped our cat from killing birds and other wildlife — Cats are adorable, unfortunately, they’re also killing billions of birds and causing wildlife extinctions.

Cats kill somewhere between 1 to 4 BILLION birds each year in the United States alone, and have caused a minimum of 33 extinctions. The national tally of birds killed by cats in Australia is broadly comparable to recent assessments for Canada, but less than that reported for the United States (because the cat population is much higher there). However, it remains challenging to interpret this mortality tally in terms of population viability or conservation concern for Australian birds.

Why does my cat kill birds and bring them to me? Why do cats bring you dead birds and other animals? Cats bring you dead or injured animals because they love you and want you to learn to be a good hunter, too. You’re part of their pride. So those “gifts” are their way of trying to teach you (incompetent human) how to kill animals as well as they do.
