The musk ox, or musk ox (Latin Ovibos moschatus) is the only modern representative of the genus of musk oxen (Ovibos) of the Polorogi family.
Musk oxen are large, stocky mammals with a large head and a short neck, covered with very thick fur. Musk oxen have sharp, rounded horns with a massive base on the forehead, which they use to protect themselves from predators.
The distant ancestors of modern musk oxen lived at the end of the Miocene in the highlands of Central Asia. About 3.5 million years ago, when the climate became noticeably colder, the ancestors of musk oxen descended from the Himalayas and spread across Siberia and the rest of northern Eurasia.
