In this video, we show how we can use Black Mollies and Platies to control certain types of algae in a planted aquarium.
It is normal to have an algal outbreak during the first month of the aquarium setup. Normally we use popular algae control fishes like Ottocinclus and Amano shrimp for algae control. This has two problems.
1) They are not suitable for all types of algae, and
2) Being wild caught they are quite costly
Also, Ottocinclus does not take any aquarium fish food, so once the algae are controlled they mostly starve.
So in this video, we have documented how Black Mollies and Platies, two common, hardy as well as cheap aquarium fish, are good at handling certain types of algae, especially filamentous algae like Hair and Silk algae.
Understanding why algae is coming is also important and hence comes the need of water testing. We have tried to cover the parameters which should be tested especially ammonia. We have also shown the use of Microbelift Xtreme for ammonia control.
This is secong part of our video on algae control. The first part can be seen here: https://youtu.be/kPM9M3JVEuI
