3 Unique Adaptations!

Wombats have some unique adaptations.

Here are three.

Firstly.

Like some other marsupials, such as the kangaroo, the female wombats have a pouch for their Joey.

However, their pouch is backwards facing.

This protects the joey while they are digging.

Secondly.

Wombats are the only animals in the world that produce cube-shaped poop.

The cube shape is formed within the intestines.

Wombats arrange their poop to mark territories and attract mates.

It is thought that the cubic shape makes them more stackable and less likely to roll, which gives this shape a biological advantage.

Thirdly.

Wombat teeth lack roots and are ever-growing, just like the those of rodents.
