Garchumuk Fishing Cat Release Video

Human and Environment Alliance League is proud to be associated with a one-of-a-kind initiative.

A series of Fishing Cat conservation awareness programs are being conducted at Garchumuk Zoological Garden-Mini Zoo, Howrah Forest Division by the West Bengal Zoo Authority in collaboration with our sister concern, The Fishing Cat Project.

Conservation is a multiple stakeholder initiative and thus a crucial component of these programs are our local partners - Howrah Jela Joutho Poribesh Moncho, Shyampur Siddeshwari Mahavidyalaya Eco-club and Green Chain Movement who have or had worked at the grassroots.

The awareness programs are targeted to increase tolerance and empathy towards the Fishing Cat among local residents sharing space with the cat, and, convert 'fear'/'conflict' to 'fascination' for our State Animal. Local residents who experience negative interactions with the Fishing Cat such as fear psychosis are invited to these programs which consist of interaction sessions, a drama and direct observation of the Fishing Cat in open enclosures where their habitat has been created.

A big thanks to the dynamic DFO of Howrah Forest Division, and her entire staff for their energetic support and participation in the program. Thanks also to Jhalapala theatre group that created an engaging drama which attracted children, women and public in general.
