Hamster Ate Their Babies, But Why? Hamsters may be small, but these friendly “pocket pets” sure have big hearts. Cuddly, furry critters are one of the most popular small animal pets. They are cute, furry mammals with oversized cheek pouches and short tails. There are about 20 hamster species found in a variety of habits, from deserts and plains to sand dunes and agricultural fields across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Like all rodents, hamsters’ incisor teeth have no roots and never stop growing. By gnawing, they keep their teeth nice and sharp while also preventing them from becoming too overgrown. Hamsters have poor eyesight; they are nearsighted and colorblind. Equipped with an acute sense of smell, hamsters are able to distinguish each other by scent and, if handled often, also can recognize their owners by smell.
