Harp Seal pups are born with a thick layer of white fur to keep them warm in the ice and snow. It turns out that a month-old pup hasn't yet fully mastered the technique of holding its breath underwater, so when it enters the water, it accidentally lets water into its nostrils, causing it to sneeze. As the seal pup grows older, this layer of white fur will gradually shed, and the pup will start living in the water. Adult seals close their nostrils and mouths tightly while breathing in water to prevent water from entering their respiratory tract.
