In this video, I’ll show you how to use a Hang on Back filter (HOB) as a dedicated polishing filter packed with filter floss, poly fill, and chemical media like Seachem Purigen, carbon, and PhosGuard. This setup makes it super easy to swap out polishing and nutrient-removing media without disturbing your canister filter.
I personally use this method on my 150-gallon FOWLR tank — not just for polishing, but for nutrient removal from tap water. By running Purigen, carbon, and PhosGuard in my HOB, I keep phosphates and organics under control and reduce algae growth, while my canister filter focuses on biological filtration.
