Elephant seals are the largest member of the seal family, a class of mammals. There are two species of elephant seals, called according to the hemisphere in which they live. Northern elephant seals are found in the coastal waters around Canada and Mexico, and southern elephant seals are common off the coast of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina.
The oldest confirmed fossils of these animals are from the Pliocene Epoch and have been found in New Zealand.
Only the adult male has a large trunk similar to that of an elephant. The male uses it to roar during the mating season.
