With wings spanning an incredible three metres, the bearded vulture is Europe's largest bird. But this magnificent giant has been persecuted over the years and to see one is still a rare occurrence. Find out more in my film about the wildlife of the French Alps here: https://youtu.be/ZVJybr0t5Lw

BEARDED VULTURE SUCCESS STORY
The last wild bearded vulture was shot dead in 1913. But thanks to a reintroduction programme using bearded vultures kept in zoos, there are now more than 300 individuals left.
BIRD OF LEGENDS
Whilst this bird's incredible size is impressive, it is also responsible for its decline. Traditionally the sight of a bearded vulture flying over the mountains of Europe struck fear in the hearts of those that lived there - and legends abounded that these birds would take lambs (hence its German name, lammergeier, which means 'lamb vulture) and even babies!
VULTURES
But bearded vultures are actually scavengers and do not hunt live prey. In other countries these birds were revered. For example in Iran, you could become royal if the shadow of a bearded vulture passes over you.

I am a British wildlife artist based in Thixendale, North Yorkshire, UK. I build ideal habitats to encourage wildlife into my garden and use nest cams to study their behaviour. These studies inform my paintings. I share the best of my video research on this channel for free. If you would like to support my work please consider a small donation here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=A52ZHAMJZC3J4
Or of course you may like to purchase my artwork which you will find on my website: https://www.robertefuller.com. Many of the paintings are portraits of the creatures you watch here!
