Why ‘Cocaine Hippos’ are Taking Over Colombia

Do you know that 1,000 cocaine hippos
will roam Colombia by 2035
if strong measures are not taken?

You see, in the 1970's Pablo Escobar wanted a private zoo.

And for someone who would burn 2 million dollars
just to keep his daughter warm.

Money was definitely not an issue.

So he went around the world smuggling
elephants, giraffes, hippos and other exotic wildlife
back to his private zoo, known as Hacienda Napoles.

But then the King of Cocaine got smoked by the police.

His animals were either transferred or donated to other zoos.

Except for the 4 Hippos. They were too challenging to seize and relocate,
so they were left on the neglected property.

With plenty of food and lack of natural predators.
The hippos population just blew up.

As of 2023, their numbers have reached 200.

Despite their seemingly cute appearance with their chubby bodies,
they are, in fact, the deadliest large mammals in the world.
