The female Cooper's hawks where I live seem to be the better than the males at hunting and don't miss very often. But taking on an adult squirrel is out of the question. They don't bite kill like other raptors, they choke their prey out. On occasion they will drop a mammal or even drown their catch. They rely solely on their talons and won't risk them getting hurt unless absolutely necessary.
