The immature yellowbar angelfish (Pomacanthus maculosus) is a marine fish that belongs to the family Pomacanthidae. It has a deep blue to black body with bright blue fins and several white and pale blue bars along the sides. The bars are slightly curved and vertical. The caudal fin is transparent and only the rear third is yellow.
The yellow markings along the sides of the juveniles appear when they reach around 6 cm in length, and the full transformation to adult coloration occurs at 10 to 15 cm. The adults have a brownish blue body with a large yellow blotch on the middle and dark blue spots near the head. The caudal fin is pale yellow with irregular blue lines.
The yellowbar angelfish is native to the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It has also been introduced to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Florida and Brazil. It lives in coral reefs, rocky areas and silty bays, and feeds mainly on sponges and tunicates. It can grow up to 40 cm in length and live up to 36 years.
