Otters have a quirky and clever relationship with rocks! Many species, especially sea otters, use rocks as tools. They’ll carry a favorite stone in a special pouch of loose skin under their arm and use it to crack open clams, mussels, or sea urchins. Some otters even seem to have “favorite” rocks they carry for years, almost like a prized possession. On land, river otters and sea otters also play with rocks, juggling them between their paws and tossing them around, which researchers think helps keep their skills sharp, or it might just be pure otter fun!
