Sea otters have a lot of loose skin under their arms. This loose skin creates folds that sea otters use as pockets. In the wild, sea otters will dive to the ocean floor to forage for food. During these foraging dives, sea otters will fill their pockets full of mussels, clams, sea urchins, and other tasty treats!

This sea otter, named Tazlina, was rescued in 2019 after being abandoned by her mother. At the time of her rescue, Taz the sea otter was determined to be only a day old. She still had her umbilical cord and her teeth had just begun to erupt. Because she was so young, and because she was extensively raised by humans, the NOAA and the Alaskan Department of Wildlife determined she lacked the skills to survive in the wild and would be a poor candidate for release. Thus, she was deemed non-releasable and remains under human care where she has thrived with her otter family at the Vancouver Aquarium where she is an ambassador for her species.

I was happy to have been one of the lucky marine biologists who took part in raising Tazzy by hand, both in Alaska and Vancouver, and she has a very special place in my heart!
