Bears have one of the most powerful senses of smell in the entire animal kingdom—up to seven times stronger than that of a bloodhound. This incredible ability helps them locate food sources from miles away, even if the food is hidden underground, inside sealed containers, or beneath layers of snow. For example, a grizzly bear has been known to smell a food from more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) away! This super-sense is thanks to a highly developed part of their brain dedicated to scent—much larger than in most mammals. It plays a key role in helping them survive in the wild, especially during the months leading up to hibernation when they must eat almost constantly to build up fat reserves.
