Sea otter ears have a valve-like structure that enables them to close when underwater. Recent studies have found that although sea otters can detect underwater sounds, their hearing appears to be primarily adapted to sounds that travel through the air adapted and not underwater. The sea otter holding still while I check her ears is named Clara. We trained Clara to hold still so we can give her basic veterinary care. In this specific case, we've trained Clara to hold still while we check her ears.
Clara is a rescued sea otter who was deemed non-releasable after a series of unsafe encounters with humans and pets. It was determined by the NOAA and the US Fish & Wildlife Service that Clara lacked a fear of humans and this posed a danger to herself and the public.
