You might have heard about glyphosate - it’s the active ingredient in Roundup, which is a pretty common weed killer used by food producers. It’s a broad spectrum weed killer that will kill any plant in its path. Roundup-Ready crops are things like corn, soy, alfalfa, beets, canola - these foods are all genetically engineered to be able to tolerate Roundup so that only the weeds around them are killed. This increases crop sizes and keeps costs down. But this comes at a cost to anybody - or any dog - that eats Roundup Ready crops. And here are the 3 costly results of eating Roundup Ready foods:

First, the World Health Organization says glyphosate is likely to cause many forms of cancer, liver disease, hormone disruption and thyroid diseases. Second, glyphosate binds to minerals, making them unavailable for him to use. So any dog eating a daily serving of glyphosate is at risk for zinc or manganese deficiency. And third, glyphosate is an antibiotic. It kills weeds by disabling a pathway that makes essential amino acids - without these amino acids, and without many minerals, the weeds curl up and die because they can’t produce energy to live. Now, mammals don’t have these pathways, so that makes researchers believe that Roundup is safe … but bacteria do. So Roundup kills bacteria just as quickly as it kills weeds.

Now there are trillions of bacteria living inside your dog’s digestive system - they’re called a microbiome and they’re an essential part of your dog’s health and immune system. A healthy biome is directly linked to overall health. They didn’t really consider this when they made Roundup. But if your dog is eating small amounts of antibiotic every day, it will devastate his gut bacteria populations, causing gut inflammation and leaky gut as well as inflammation throughout his entire body. This burns out his organs and causes chronic disease as well as food interlaces and gut issues.

So let’s get to the most important part … is your dog actually eating Roundup with every meal? And by the way, if you like this video please let me know in the comments below - and if have any questions, leave a comment and our team will help you out.

The highest levels of glyphosate were found in grain-free foods that don’t contain Roundup-Ready crops. And that’s because of a little thing called spray drying or desiccation. Roundup Ready crops are sprayed with Roundup throughout the growing season to keep weeds down. But other crops use Roundup in a different way - some crops are sprayed with Roundup just before harvesting to help dry them out. And these crops contain far more glyphosate than any other food. The crops that are spray dried are OWL foods - or oats, wheat and legumes. Grain-free foods replace grains with legumes like peas, lentils or beans. And that adds a ton more glyphosate to your dog’s food. The foods tested by Cornell contained glyphosate concentrations between 80 - 2,000 ppm - that’s 4-12 times more than most human foods.

So if you want to reduce the amount of glyphosate in your dog’s food - and trust me, you do, then here is what you need to do: 1. Feed foods without grains or legumes. Feed raw, freeze-dried or use our free cooked recipes on Dogs Naturally. We don’t use starch in our cooked recipes. 2. Avoid grain-free foods unless they’re organic. Organic foods can’t be spray dried so they’re safe. 3. Feed foods with the least amount of carbohydrate. The Cornell study showed that the more starch a food contained, the higher the glyphosate content. 4. Feed canned food - canned foods contain less starch and glyphosate than kibble does. 5. Feed regular kibble that’s not grain-free. Now if you have a question about your dog’s food, just leave a comment below and I’ll be happy to help you out.
