There are eight unique species of bears in the world. The Zoo is home to four of them—polar, grizzly, sun and Andean. In this video, you can see grizzly bears Huckleberry and Finley. They are an orphaned brother and sister pair from Montana. When they were orphaned, they were too young to survive on their own in the wild. In 2017, they found their home at the Zoo.

Grizzly bears are a subspecies of brown bears and are one of the largest and most widely distributed bear species in the world. They can be found in a number of states in the U.S. including Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Alaska.

Grizzly bears, Andean bears and sun bears are advanced nest builders! Here at the Zoo, keepers will provide them with a variety of materials they need to create large nests for them to rest and sleep in. Straw, wood wool, branches, bamboo, banana leaves, dried grasses, and other leafy browse make perfect materials for a bear nest. Bear nests look similar to birds’ nests but BIGGER!

Festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today! Guests will have the opportunity to see the bears enjoy enrichment and talk to carnivore keepers about the bears at the Zoo. Stop by Lakeside Café for a lunch special inspired by the bears and their diets—Or, try the fun “Honey Bear” drink available only at Starbucks at the Zoo!
