These reptiles are mainly native to Asia, Africa, and Australia, but can also be found in parts of the Americas due to the illegal pet trade. Monitor lizards are known for their large claws, powerful tails, long necks, and well-developed legs. They can move quickly and powerfully in pursuit of prey. Most monitor lizards are terrestrial and largely carnivorous. Depending on the size of the lizard, they will eat anything from insects and birds to small mammals.

Monitor lizards are considered to be the most intelligent of all lizards and some of the most intelligent reptiles in general.
Monitors do not blink and they have very good vision. Scientists have observed monitors watching planes in the sky.
Unlike many other reptiles, many monitor lizards have high metabolisms and burn energy like mammals.
As pets, monitors have been observed seeking human attention and wanting to play.
Monitors are alert and skilled predators.
गोह:
गोह पानी व दलदल से प्यार करती है। यह साँप की तरह जीभ लपलपाती रहती है। इसकी लंबाई सात फ़ुट से भी अधिक होती है। पूँछ लंबी, चपटी, एवं देह की अपेक्षा भारी होती है। दाँत नुकीले, थूथन का सिरा चपटा, सिर दबा हुआ होता है एवं अंगुलियाँ साधारण लंबाई की होती हैं। इनकी पूँछ की मार बड़ा असर करती है।

गोह जब दौड़ती है तब पूँछ ऊपर उठा लेती है। यह मेंढक, कीड़े-मकोड़े, मछलियाँ और केकड़े खाती है। यह बड़े गुस्सैल स्वभाव की है। गोह बरसात से पहले किसी बिल या छेद में १५ से २० अंडे देती है। मादा अंडों को छुपाने के लिए बिल फिर भर देती है और बहकाने के लिए चारों ओर दो-तीन और बिल खोदकर छोड़ देती है। आठ-नौ महीनों के बाद जाकर सफ़ेद रंग के अंडे फूटते हैं। छोटे बच्चों के शरीर पर बिंदिया व चमकदार छल्ले होते हैं। गोह पानी में रहती है एवं तैराकी में दक्ष होती है। यह एक तेज़ धावक भी है एवं वृक्ष पर चढ़ने में माहिर हैोती है। पुराने समय में जो काम हाथी-घोड़े भी नहीं कर पाते थे, उसे गोह आसानी से कर देती थी। इनकी कमर में रस्सी बाँधकर दीवार पर फेंक दिया जाता था और जब यह अपने पंजों से जमकर दीवार पकड़ लेती थी, तब रस्सी के सहारे ऊपर चढ़ा जाता था।
