Most American toads experience a very high mortality either when they are in the tadpole stage or shortly after they metamorphose into very small defenseless small baby toads along the shorelines of the water bodies they had been laid as eggs in the spring. They run a gauntlet of predators as they actively search for food, they are in turn eaten by birds, mammals, reptiles, and other amphibians that find them edible. If most of them were not eaten, they would soon either exhaust .the food source of very small insects and would overrun the pond areas with hundreds of thousands of toads. I brought home 8 of these recently transformed toad-lets from along the shore line, from the countless thousands that were hopping all over the shoreline area. As you can see these 8 are probably not only doing better than most of their kin, but are probably 10 or 20 times larger than those that might have survived since I captured these little toad-lets in September 2021 2 months ago.
