For the past 6 years, volunteers at the Strandloper Project have been conducting surveys of marine mammals in the Swartvlei Beach bay area of the Garden Route. For the past six months the frequency of Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins has declined. During the same time, the frequency of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins sightings has increased in the bay, with the Bottlenose Dolphins hunting closer inshore.
In mid April 2025, on a marine mammal survey in the bay, both species were observed, though not simultaneously. Both species focused their hunting in the turbulence of of a rip tide before swimming eastwards.
