Ringed seals are relatively small compared to other seals. In fact, they are the smallest ice seal. Ice seals, also known as pack seals, spend a vast majority of their life cycles living on or around sea ice of the Earth's polar regions. Some defining characteristics of ice seals are their thick layers of blubber and their "fixed" flippers. If you look closely at the flippers of this ringed seal you can see it almost looks like they are half closed. The flippers are "fixed" in a hooked position. This, along with their strong claws, allow them to grab onto the slippery ice and pull themselves out of the water.
My favorite adaptation of the chubby ringed seals, as you could probably tell, is how tiny their little heads are! While adorable, their tiny heads are one of the adaptations that allow ringed seals to survive in the cold arctic. Having a smaller head actually helps prevent heat loss!
