In October 2022, the Maharashtra Forest Department rescued an adult Shikra found lying in a storage room at Junnar. They brought the injured bird to the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre where our veterinary team sprung into action and provided it with intensive care. A fracture in its right wing left the bird immobile for months and it remained in a smaller enclosure for medical observation. With intensive checkups, pain medication and health supplements, we were able to make slow but steady progress.
When the Shikra was shifted to a larger space, the team held their breaths, unsure of whether the bird would fly again, but soon enough, their efforts paid off. The bird soon started making short flights within its enclosure. After careful consideration, it was deemed fit for release, and it was safely returned to its natural habitat.
