How big is a walrus? Well, watch a walrus named Balzak haul out of the water. You can see the effect gravity has on his bulk and the effort it takes just to lumber around. Balzak quite literally weighs a ton. An actual ton. Roughly 2,100 pounds or almost 1,000 kilos. And as big as he looks, this walrus is still growing. He’s going to end up being about twice this size. Adult male walruses average around 4,000 pounds. That’s the average weight of a modern sedan. Or 40 bags of cement.

The metal caps on his tusks are a form of preventative dentistry. In the wild, walruses often crack or break their tusks which can lead to a life threatening infection. The roots of the tusks grow deep into the sinus cavity and such an infection can easily transfer to the brain. The caps prevent this from happening. Learn more: https://www.youtube.com/@KPassionate
Balzak was born at the Aquarium du Quebec back in 2016 and I had the privilege of working with this handsome walrus for several years. During that time, Balzak participated in several important research projects into the metabolism of walruses and this information was used to enact laws and policies aimed at protecting his cousins in the wild.
Recently, Balzak and his sister Lakina have moved to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium where I now have the opportunity to work with him again after several years. He is doing great and I can't wait to share more of him and his sister Lakina in the near future!
